Why Certification Is Required

In 1992, I had a rehab dealer in Maine who was working with an adult CP client who had not been able to drive her chair for 3 years. I sent this dealer a scanner and a drive switch for him to do an evaluation with the individual. He called me from the house said the evaluation went great. He had only one problem this lady did not want him to take the scanner off her chair and send it back to me while they waited for funding. I told him to keep it. When the funding came through it was awarded to another dealer who had no rehab experience. The original equipment was returned and this new dealer ordered the equipment.

I was in Seattle, Washington and I got a call from my office stating that this individual had called the office in tears and asked that I contact her. I called and asked what the problem was and she said that she was unable to driver her chair because the dealer left the equipment in a box on the floor. I flew from Seattle to Bangor Maine, rented a car and drove to her house. I installed the system myself. From that day forward ASL required certification of it’s dealers and will not sell to any dealer that is not qualified by ASL standards.
